The DIR © / Floortime model (Developmental, individual differences, relationship-based) provides a
comprehensive framework to improve a child’s functional, emotional developmental capacities and intellectual
capacities in the context of his or her biological challenges and familial needs. Families are involved in learning how
to harness the child’s affect and interests in order to build his or her capacities. This approach can be used with
children experiencing autism spectrum disorders as well as other mental health issues.
